The Prize is Daniel Yergin’s Pulitzer Prize winning historical work that traces the international struggle for oil in the last two centuries.

    Summary Of The Book

Oil has been the single most important cause of international struggle for power in the twentieth century. More wars have been waged to achieve world oil domination than for any other reason. In The Prize, renowned energy expert Daniel Yergin charts the epic history of oil politics that has not only shaped the present face of world economy but will also dictate its fate in the twenty-first century.

The book traces the very beginning of this struggle in the 1850s when oil first came to prominence in the western world. It follows it all the way through the First and Second World Wars up till Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and the ensuing Gulf War. The 800 page book is held as the definitive history of oil politics. It received the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in its year of release. It has also been adapted to a well-received six hour made-for-television documentary series narrated by Donald Sutherland.

Fantastic ! Exhaustive and exhilarating all at once. Couldn't have been better !!

A fantastic account of the history of the world oil industry - and with it it the history of the modern economy, diplomacy and geopolitics. One can't begin to fathom the extensive research that the author has engaged in, to compose this epic of a book.
A must read for anyone remotely related to oil and energy business or anyone interested in understanding modern global politics and energy policy.

As big as any Oil company

The book is worth its size.Imaging writing a story about reality for 100 years with continuity and spice keeping in mind all the characters and their quirks.Superb effort. But one thing that lingers in your mind is, the author has not taken any sides and no mention of the aftermath of brutal oil exploration in countries around the world. That is a major minus of the book. Rest no complaints.

An Almost Comprehensive, but Strongly Biased Account of Petroleum Industry

This book is possibly Daniel Yergin's finest work that informs the masses about the economic origins of petroleum, its exploitation and exploration, and the politics surrounding it. Albeit rich in information, this book has some serious flaws as well.

On the positive side, Yergin starts-off outlining the origins of nascent oil 'industry' when a few entrepreneurs in the west saw its potential to become the leading source of energy, and ultimately, a dominant source political power. The first...
