  • Description

The Sanjay Story details the rise and fall of Sanjay Gandhi and serves as an indispensable historical record of a time that changed the face of Indian politics.

    Summary Of The Book

The Sanjay Story is an attempt by the author to demystify the Sanjay Gandhi phenomenon and present to the readers its impact on the present day political scenario of India. The beginning of the book is set in the Nehru household and gives a glimpse into the relationship of Feroze Gandhi with the Nehrus, and in particular the relationship of Indira and Kamala. The shadows of the marriage of Indira and Feroze characterized by various insecurities and complexes go on to describe the reason for their son’s volatile personality.

The author also dwells into the notorious side of Sanjay by talking about his Doon School days. Known to be a loner and mediocre, he had a weakness for pinching cars, taking them for short drives and bringing them back. This continued even after he shifted to Delhi and one such case of car theft in May 1964 made its way into the newspapers.

In a brutally honest way, the author traces the dramatic rise of Sanjay’s popularity soon after the declaration of the Emergency. His hold over the Youth Congress and the more than necessary stress on the sterilization campaign that he falsely believed would give him a rightful place in history are portrayed by the author in frank detail. Also addressed in the book is the role of the media in building the so called ‘Cult of Sanjay’ and the setting up of the Maruti factory given Sanjay’s craze for cars.

The Sanjay Story is the only biography of Sanjay Gandhi that gives its readers a rare insight into the life of Sanjay Gandhi.

FINALLY A GOOD BOOK ON MY HERO

I always used to wonder that why there hasn't been a good book on someone as great as Sanjay Gandhi by a genuinely good author. Finally there is. Its a very well written book of a nation changing political career cut short. What would have been had he been alive. Certainly India would have been a much better and vibrant nation. Atleast people would have thought twice about taking bribes and committing crimes. India might have been under an iron fist, but most of the Indians need that to keep ...

    A good read.

An honest attempt by VM to delve into facts and stories to project Sanjay as he was!! VM has taken a balanced view. Also makes interesting reading, specially the inside story of Nehru, Indira and the attempt of Sanjay to cut down the population.

The only good biography of this person

Warning-this is not a totally new book. It was a fairly well researched "quickie" which was among the large number of books which came out soon after the 1977 elections. But this was the only one which concentrated on Sanjay Gandhi, who may well have been a long-time leader of India if fate had not intervened. But what if he hadn't crashed his plane in 1980? You will get a good idea from this book. There is a brief introduction bringing up the last 2 years of his life. It is worth reading for...

    Informative...short good read...but not indepth...

Just finished reading the book...it is a short read...not too informative like other books on the same "era"...
Author is biased when it comes to where the loyalties lie...;)
But after reading the book..every citizen realizes...if only "this" didnt occur..we could have been way ahead as a developed nation....

    An interesting read

"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it."
“The Sanjay Story” by Vinod Mehta has been a relevation of sorts as far as Sanjay Gandhi and his life is concerned. I went through the feeling of laughter, shock, and despair at various chapters of the book. It is almost unfathomable that a man like Sanjay Gandhi dominated the Indian political scene under the umbrella of his mother, the Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The outrageous scandals that were a part of...

    Well Written

A book well written. The style is very contemporary considering it was written more than 30 yrs back.
The only let down is, that Sanjay Gandhi's life isn't all that interesting. A good read for a long flight.
