Summary of the Book

Ever since the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species, the world has been constantly trying to decipher the secret of man’s evolution from the same branch as the apes. In this book, Jared Diamond questions how Homo sapiens managed to thwart all its other kindred species, and how Euroasians managed to thrive when other races didn’t do so well. He uses biological and anthropological arguments to test and rebuke traditional hegemonic views that the dominant tribes came from some manner of superior genepool. He attributes the success of some races to their locality, explaining that the atmosphere and local conditions were more compatible for their progress in comparison to that of the others. An erstwhile medical researcher and professor of physiology at the UCLA School of Medicine, he a MacArthur Fellow with a prolific history of over 200 articles in Discover, Natural History, Nature and Geo magazines.

Professor Diamond is also known for Guns, Germs and Steel which won a Pulitzer Prize.
