  • Description

The TOI Story is the story of the Times of India Group and their journey during the early 1980s and 90s.

    Summary of the Book

The Times Group is known to have transformed the mediascape in the 1980s and 90s. It reinvented itself, during this decade, from a low-profit and conservative group to a market that was focused, innovative and profitable. They were driven by only a handful of brands. Their initiative sparked many controversies within and outside the group. Eventually, the Times Group helped in redefining the media space in the country. They expanded their readership, transformed their content, and started advertising. They persuaded publishers to see newspapers as a profitable business and not a lever for political influence. Samir Jain was a major part of this transformation and blended spiritual values with his personal life. He built on his ambitions and had a good sense of how the world around him was changing.

A book which encapsulates an era of change and the journey of entrepreneurial leadership

This book is definitely a piece of exhaustive research which is organised and presented in a great collection of words. The author had surely invested many years of her life into the compilation of this book. The beauty is not just about the never-known facts but it's the way they have been made part of such a spellbinding storytelling. If this book was not on shelves, may be I could have never known what all has gone behind a newspaper to turn it into an indispensable part of our lives witho...

a happening story, obviously complex, told competently

I bought this book for its title - The TOI story. Done by an ex journalist who herself worked with the newspaper. I wondered though that what was the fuss about a newspaper after all ! But halfway through the book, specially the portions about how the ivory tower editors of that time were chastised and brought down to the ground --- and I knew this was a happening story. Samir Jain neutralised not just his editors, but also folded up (unemotionally, it seems), publications that his family eld...

A fascinating insight of the media world ...

The interesting journey unfolds slowly. It picks up pace like a thriller and lets us peep into the media domain and what goes on behind the scenes. Well researched and presented. Good job and all the best!!!

    Amazing Book

Being a merchant navy officer, had no interest in books. i was more into gadgets and gaming. only had a small place for media as my father was a journalist, because of which bought this book THE TOI STORY from flipkart. And as suggested this is an amazing book, it creates the environment and picture of the giant of this industry. Would not like to disclose the book entirely but would suggest you to read for yourself and see "how a newspaper changed the rules the game". Kudos to Sangita P. Men...

A lively and vivid account, Samir Jain is fascinating, rich with multiple views and comments

The TOI Story is about the most turbulent – and controversial - period in Indian newspaper history. The 1980s and 90s was when sacred cows were demolished, rules and conventions were violated and several (bloated?) reputations came crashing. It’s hard to believe this today. But not long ago, English newspapers in India were drab, boring, preachy and cash guzzling set-ups. They were valued by their owners more as levers for political influence. They talked at, rather than talked to readers. W...

    Loved reading it.

Sangita's The TOI Story is the first book on Journalism I have read. I have had the pleasure of reading the book in one sitting on a train journey from Hyderabad to Mumbai and enjoyed evry part of it thoroughly. In her book She had meticulously chronicled the growth and the radical changes the Indian Newspaper publishing Industry had undergone induced by the big bad boy of the industry, Bennet Coleman & Company Limited publishing The Times of India. She had over a period of 12 years researche...

    theory is practical

I have been reading Times of India for many years, may be from my tenth standard. Millions of people are reading it daily actually. It is interesting to go really behind the scenes of this newspaper group and try to understand the various happenings. The book starts with the history of The Times of India (which is now 175 years old). How it started, who was the Indian who bought it from the foreigners etc etc. I was even surprised to know that TOI was under government control for a few years ...

    Lacks objectivity

Although the research is thorough, this book has been written in such a way that it glosses over the low points in the history of TOI and exaggerates the pluses. It is also too praiseworthy of Samir Jain and does not present an unbiased view of the elusive man.
All in all, this is more of an advertisement, than the actual telling of the TOI story.

    Toying with The TOI Story

The story of India's largest daily is certainly no children's fairy tale! Yet,Sangita P.Menon Malhan succeeds in telling a tough, sometimes bitter story which the world was waiting to hear for a long time. Her well-researched work and smooth narrative bring to life the people and the ideas behind The Times of India. Highly recommended!

the real media king is samir jain (not the silly Arnabs and Barkhas)

Never knew that contemporary Indian media is actually shaped by a man called Samir Jain ! There is so much clutter in the media, with very many personalities and debates. People coming in and out of the limelight. Celebrities, politicians, filmstars, sportspersons. And yet, never has there been any mention or discussion about this man. At least I have not come across.

It is a very well researched book. Many personalities have given their views about the media revolution that The Times of Ind...
