  • Description

The Trial is a classic novel of existentialism and an allegory on totalitarianism by Franz Kafka.

    Summary of the Book

Josef K., a respectable bank officer, is arrested suddenly. He is offered no reasons as to his charge, and he must defend himself at court. He is only informed that his situation is extremely dire and hopeless. The ensuing trial, and the circumstances of his arrest showcase Kafka’s affinity to churn out a tale that can evoke the darkest corridors of the human psyche. The story is considered to be a satirical allegory, a prophetic parable on the excesses of modern bureaucracy and its affiliation to totalitarian ideals, and a tale on existentialism.

    • Franz Kafka (1883–1924) was born into a Jewish family in Prague. In 1906 he received a doctorate in jurisprudence, and for many years he worked a tedious job as a civil service lawyer investigating claims at the State Worker's Accident Insurance Institute. He never married, and published only a few slim volumes of stories during his lifetime. Meditation, a collection of sketches, appeared in 1912; The Stoker: A Fragment in 1913; Metamorphosis in 1915; The Judgement in 1916; In the Penal Colony in 1919; and A Country Doctor in 1920. The great novels were not published until after his death from tuberculosis: America, The Trial and The Castle.

    It is Kafka's Trial

People with even a slight literary leaning would have heard of this book, or atleast the name Kafka. This book regularly figures in all the lists of greatest books.

This is the book which gave birth to the dictionary word "kafkaesque". See wikipedia for details.

The book is a quite simple story of a man. The story itself is not at all complicated, and is very easy to read. There is no difficulty to understand anything narrated, but there will be a little unease in your mind as you read.

    Dystopian Classic

A story of a man under Trail for a crime he doesn't even know or can remotely guess. This story suggests a disturbing notion of our present day nation state where the annals of law are not accessible to the common man. The law as portrayed in the fable "Before the Law" in the final chapters of the novel is a labyrinth guarded by self appointed men who don't understand it, who have forgotten that law is to serve people and not the other way round. The whole novel is built on this notion as the...
