WINNER OF THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2008 Balram Halwai is the White Tiger - the smartest boy in his village. His family is too poor for him to afford for him to finish school and he has to work in a teashop, breaking coals and wiping tables. But Balram gets his break when a rich man hires him as a chauffeur, and takes him to live in Delhi. The city is a revelation. As he drives his master to shopping malls and call centres, Balram becomes increasingly aware of immense wealth and opportunity all around him, while knowing that he will never be able to gain access to that world. As Balram broods over his situation, he realizes that there is only one way he can become part of this glamorous new India - by murdering his master. The White Tiger presents a raw and unromanticised India, both thrilling and shocking - from the desperate, almost lawless villages along the Ganges, to the booming Wild South of Bangalore and its technology and outsourcing centres. The first-person confession of a murderer, The White Tiger is as compelling for its subject matter as for the voice of its narrator - amoral, cynical, unrepentant, yet deeply endearing.

    thrilling and brilliant writing

this was by far the best book in its genre - fiction - I've read from a first time Indian writer. Brilliant story, superb plot, very well written.
If you like dark and mysterious story filled with negative characters, in an urban setting you can relate, while xposing the underbelly of a city's new-rich lifestyle, this book will mix all that up and serve up a mean dish..
    worth a read...
and don't care what foreigners think of a city or India after reading this... they should know better...

    Nice

I feel the plot was good. But immensely slow which kills the the whole vibe of the story. It was written for the sake of writing. The story, plot and creativity of the story is what I liked. It was more of waste of time.

An honest story-if somewhat uncomfortable to an Indian

A brutally honest, savage and no-holds-barred account of a poor man, born in a remote village in India, who wants to get into the "elite" club of successful entrepreneurs. The exact opposite of the slogan "India Shinning", whereby we see the petty, shallow and almost choking nature of life in the remote villages in India, seen through the prism of Balaram Halwai. Shorn of any kind of exegesis, this is a book, on what not to do to remain an upright person in life and what many-a-times happen j...
