  • Description

Those In Peril is a captivating story by Wilbur Smith that revolves around the protagonist Hazel Bannock, whose company is under threat, and whose daughter has been kidnapped by the Somalian Pirates.

    Summary Of The Book

Those In Peril is a book that begins with the author introducing his readers to Hazel Bannock, who is the protagonist of the story. Hazel owns an oil company by the name of Bannock Oil Corp and now this company is finding itself constantly threatened. Along with this, Hazel’s daughter Cayla, also finds her life threatened by the Somalian Pirates and is kidnapped by them as well.

The readers are then introduced to Major Hector Cross, who is an ex-SAS operative, who also owns Cross Bow Security. Cross seems perfectly suited for the dangerous and complicated task that lies ahead of him. Hazel Bannock contacts Cross in order to seek his help in the protection of her company and her family. Cayla is held captive by the Somalian Pirates who demand twenty billion dollars as ransom for her life.

The author then goes on to describe the numerous spine-chilling horrors that Cayla must endure while being held captive by the pirates. Even as Major Hector Cross makes every attempt to rescue her, he must make sure to do so before it is too late. The political undertone in this novel is also very evident, and has earned a great deal of acclaim for the author.

This novel was highly appreciated by its readers, as well as publication companies such as Publishers Weekly and the Express. Those In Peril is also set to be adapted into a movie as the film rights have been granted.

    Excellently paced book

A newcomer to Wilbur Smith I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I don't like scarey thrillers, but enjoy a well thought out plot that is believable. It was well researched, covering modern issues so that readers are aware of the perspectives of each culture. The style is gripping, and intelligent without overblown superlatives or unnecessary descriptions. Everything in there was appropriate to such a well paced and crafted book.

    Disappointed..

I have over 500 novels in my personal collection and of them 17 are Wilbur Smith. 'Those in Peril' in simple words is just pathetic! I mean, this book is just not his style! He should stick to writing about in-depth Africa. I wouldn't recommend. But if anyone even then wants to read it, they can borrow it from me if they are in Jaipur.

    Good airport read

Like others have said, definitely not his best (I would save that for the sunbird or monsoon). still a page turner- maybe a bit clumsy trying to fit in islamic militancy/terrorism but you cant call him a racist like one outraged but misguided reviewer said in an earlier rant

    Not his best!

I was rather disappointed by the narration. For an action thriller, the book seems rather shallow. Certainly not Wilbur Smith material in terms of the content or research

Decent read. Add to the Wilbur smith collection

    Decent and fast read.
Wilbur Smith has put a decent amount of research into muslim extremism and piracy. Shows.
My fault with the book is that it has too long a plot with not enough time to delve into much details of each scene or characterization.
