The series was founded by Anant Pai in 1967 and it consists of over 400 titles. The series follows a comic book format and recaptures the aura of the age-old stories from Indian history, folklore, fables, mythology, and epics.

The titles included are Krishna, Mirabai, Shakuntala, Vishnu to the Rescue, Ganesha, The Brahmin and the Goat, Rani of Jhansi, Prithviraj Chauhan, and Shivaji. All of these titles characters have played a crucial role in forming the cultural heritage of India.
Some of the characters of these stories are from the Indian mythology such as Krishna, Vishnu, and Ganesha. Some of them have been picked up from Indian history such as Rani of Jhansi, Prithviraj Chauhan, Shivaji, and Mirabai. About Anant Pai
Anant Pai is famously known as Uncle Pai and is considered a pioneer in Indian comics. He is popular for being the creator of the Amar Chitra Katha series.
Besides Amar Chitra Katha, Anant Pai has also created a children’s anthology called Tinkle. He creates various comic strips under Rang Rekha Features. Also, he has produced two video films called Ekam Sat and The Secret of Success. These have been produced in Hindi and English. He has also several books on personality development for the young readers. These included How To Develop A Super Memory, How To Develop Self-confidence, and How to Achieve Success. He has produced audio books of some of the Amar Chitra Katha titles.
Born on 17th September 1929 in Karkala, India Anant Pai is also known as an Indian educationist. His ultimate motive behind the publication of his famous series Amar Chitra Katha was to teach Indian students about their own culture. He completed higher education in chemistry, chemical technology, and physics at the University of Bombay and was a dual degree holder. He had a passion for comics and publishing. Apart from that, he was a specialist in personality development. For this reason, he founded the Partha Institute of Personality Development in 1978. He had been honoured with various awards for his contributions including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the First Indian Comic Convention just a week before his death. He died of a sudden heart attack.
