  • Description

In these two devastating works, Nietzsche offers a sustained and often vitriolic attack on the morality and the beliefs of his time, in particular those of Hegel, Kant and Schopenhauer. Twilight of the Idols is a 'grand declaration of war' on reason, psychology and theology that combines highly charged personal attacks on his contemporaries with a lightning tour of his own philosophy. It also paves the way for The Anti-Christ, Nietzsche's final assault on institutional Christianity, in which he identifies himself with the 'Dionysian' artist and confronts Christ: the only opponent he feels worthy of him.

In his introduction Michael Tanner discusses the themes of Nietzsche's argument and places the works in their historical and philosophical context.

    • Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was born near Leipzig in 1844. When he was only twenty-four he was appointed to the chair of classical philology at Basel University. Works published in the 1880s include The Gay Science, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, On the Genealogy of Morals, Twilight of the Idols and The Antichrist. In January 1889, Nietzsche collapsed on a street in Turin and was subsequently institutionalized, spending the rest of his life in a condition of mental and physical paralysis. Works published after his death in 1900 include Will to Power, based on his notebooks, and Ecce Homo, his autobiography.

    Must Read Philosophy

'Twilight..' and 'The Anti...' are those little books one doesn't want to miss out if one is desperate to find some real philosophy and are fed up with traditional forms of religion, especially the 'AntiChrist'. Nietzsche is never short of sarcasm, he intensifies his strength in these books further. After reading classical books, read this and you will unconsciously change your opinion on the greats of philosophy, unless you are stubborn or an anti-Nietzcherian.
