During his one year imprisonment, Aurobindo remains in confinement for a long time. During this time he attains self-realization and reaches a higher level of yoga practice. After coming out of prison in 1909, he renounces political activism and assumes a new purpose. He declares Indian cultural awakening and awakening of nationalism as synonymous. After coming out of jail, Aurobindo gave his first public narration of historical importance in Uttarpara which became famous in history as Uttarpara Akhyan.
