  • Description

A compilation of various stories put together in one single book, The Vicks Mango Tree will leave you thinking about the state of affairs during the Emergency. A subtle tug at how journalists and the middle-class were afflicted by the political situation in India, this book truly gripping.

    Summary of the Book

Anees Salim has created a fictional region named Mangobaag and shows how various characters living in this territory are living through the Emergency. With their civil liberties crippled, all they are left with is a little hope, half-hearted revolts and stern censorships.

During the Emergency, Raj Iyer a budding journalist residing in the alley of the Vicks mango tree, disappears and comes out a few year later in the form of a bronze statue. People are unsure about how or why he became this famous, but talks of a book being written on him is doing the rounds. The book will proclaim him the modern hero of Mangobaag. The story of The Vicks Mango Tree also revolves around various characters like Teacher Bhatt, Rabia Sheik and Shankar Iyer who are ordinary people. Complete with peculiar characters and obscure situations, the book is imperative and gripping.

I quite liked this book. It is witty and evocative and there are stories inside stories. Good thing about Vicks Mango Tree is most of its characters are common people with achievable dreams. I think it's what that makes the book interesting. But unlike the blurb of the book says it is only very little about Emergency. And it would have been more interesting if the story happened in one place rather than travelling to other places in the middle of the book. But a very interesting book. I will ...

    The Vicks mango tree

Great read. Loved the spread of characters and their lives. Set in the Emergency period the voice of this novel is strong and different, and humour is dark, at times very dark. The fictional city, maybe based on Delhi or Ahemadabad,is sketched well. Would recommend this book.

Couldn't connect to the book, the writing style is also not that attractive. Wonder how Harpers published such a book. not recommended all in all. The story loses pace from the middle. The story could have been better if the writing was better, that's what I feel.
