The Upanishads (in 2 Vols.) The Sacred Books of the East: Vols. 1, 15, are the translated versions of the sacred Sanskrit texts of Upanishads, translated by the great German philologist Max Muller.

Summary Of The Book

Max Muller commenced with his work of translating the Upanishads for his great German philosopher friend Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling while doing a research on the language of Sanskrit in guidance of Franz Bopp, a German linguist.

Max Muller, in his translated version of the scared Upanishads, took three things very importantly. Firstly, he translated the essence of the references to the characters that were present in the original book, without losing its hold. Secondly, he took immense measures to utilise the use of these translations. And thirdly, he translated the Upanishads in such a way, that the texts did not lose its original vibrancy after getting translated into modern language of English.

The original texts of the Upanishads were written in old Sanskrit. Anyone who does not know the language of Sanskrit can easily opt for Max Muller’s version of the Upanishads that are written in a scholarly manner.

About Friedrich Max Muller

Friedrich Max Muller was an Orientalist and a Philologist with German roots.

Max Muller was born in Dessau, Germany, in the year 1823. He received his primary schooling from the German Gymnasium and the Nicolai School situated in Leipzig, Saxony. He acquired his BA degree in Philology from the reputed Leipzig University in the year 1843.
Max Muller was honoured with the Pour le Mérite, the highest order of merit, from the Kingdom of Prussia in the year 1874. He also received the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art for his remarkable contribution to the field of art and science. The German cultural association of India, the Goethe Institutes, is named after Max Muller to pay a tribute to his extraordinary achievements.
