  • Description
Aparokshanubhuti is a Sanskrit term that means "direct experience." In the context of Advaita Vedanta philosophy, it refers to the direct experience of the Self, or Brahman. This experience is said to be beyond all concepts and distinctions, and it is the ultimate goal of spiritual practice. Adi Shankaracharya, the founder of Advaita Vedanta, wrote a short treatise called Aparokshanubhuti that discusses the nature of this direct experience. In the treatise, Shankaracharya argues that the Self is not an object that can be known through the senses or the mind. Rather, the Self is the subject of experience, and it can only be known directly. Shankaracharya describes the path to Aparokshanubhuti as a process of purification and discrimination. The seeker must first purify the mind of all impurities, such as attachment, aversion, and delusion. Then, the seeker must learn to discriminate between the Self and the non-Self. Once these steps have been taken, the seeker will be able to experience the Self directly. Aparokshanubhuti is a state of supreme peace and joy. It is a state of freedom from all suffering and limitation. The experience of Aparokshanubhuti is said to be the ultimate goal of all spiritual practice.
