    Summary of the Book

The Vedas are among the earliest books of the Indo-Aryan philosophy. Staal attempts to re-explore the origins, mantras, and the rituals of the Vedas. He has tried to bring out the factual information from the most sacred books of India, by giving them a global perspective. The book also gives extensive details on the archaeology, traditions, and Vedic math. The book also provides readers with clear comprehension on the actions and the values of the Vedic society then. It is an intriguing book that discusses Vedic sciences and their ancient history, and the idea of karma. Discovering the Vedas also talks about more interesting topics like the absence of caste in Vedas, Vedic villages, the Vedic women, and the immense contributions of the Upanishads. Frits Staal has tried to bring forth significant and relevant information to the modern-day readers.

    Scholarly, but not really enjoyable

This is a well-researched book written by a true vedic scholar. I am sure the author tried his best to provide authentic information by citing as many references as possible. It pains me, but I have to say that this book is not really readable or enjoyable. Firstly, the author's sentences are mostly complex - which will make you read the text over and over again until you get it. Secondly, the author tries to make too many references(to other texts) and sometimes keeps deviating from the cent...

This is more of history and less veda, mostly a biased western interpretation of Indian history.

please don't waste your money on this.

    Fabulous!

    5⭐️
This is legend! This is the best read on the technicality of the four Vedas. The author makes rational arguments about the one of oldest known scriptures of mankind. Staal narrates the [extraordinary] story of the [extraordinary] people that preserved these texts for over three millennia without deifying them. Frits Staal is a respected scholar among the Nambutiri community of Kerala and his documentary Altar of Fire is also a reason why we didn’t lose the Agnicayana ritual.
