  • Description

When a young boy looks into the magical well in his family’s farmhouse, he discovers a horrific truth behind his family’s “pride” in the absence of female children. Faces in the Water is a spellbinding novel by Ranjit Lal.

    Summary of the Book

Fifteen-year-old Gurmi has always believed that the well in the family farmhouse is the secret for his family’s supposed good fortune. The Diwanchand family has always taken pride in the fact that they have only sons, no daughters. When Gurmi visits the farmhouse and looks into the well, he sees the faces of three girls looking up at him from the water. The girls draw him into a supernatural world of fun, games and magic. However, Gurmi also realizes that they represent a dark secret. It is a secret which his family has always wanted to protect, no matter what the cost. Terrible crimes have defaced the name of the Diwanchand family. Gurmi is driven by a need to find the truth and exact justice from the perpetrators, but his only allies are the three ghosts. Dark, funny and tragic at times, this is the story of our society’s distaste for female children and an embodiment of female infanticide at its darkest.

    Faces in the Water

In the able hands of Ranjit Lal, the grim and sordid subject of female infanticide is dealt with amazing sensitivity. A story that could have been dark and gloomy actually becomes light and effervescent.
A great book to read and discuss with children at home, in school or in any book discussion fora. To read the entire review go to Young India Books

    Terrific purchase

It's a nice book with nice chapters in which the author Ranjit Lal talks about the discrimination on the basis of boys and girl due to their family (diwanchand) tradition.

    Unclear agenda

As much as Lal tries I don't think he understands girls. What I found weird about the book is that women and girls are either shown as victims of the system or co-conspirators. There is no independent minded woman or girl in a book supposedly related to the girl child. Also, some of the dialogue seemed forced. Lal has written good books. This is not one of them though.
