  • Description
In Shashi Tharoor's satirical masterpiece, the story of the Mahabharata is retold as recent Indian history, and renowned political personalities begin to resemble characters from the Mahabharata-all of whom have a curious and ambiguous relationship with Draupadi Mokrasi (D. Mokrasi for short) . . . Brimming with incisive wit and as enjoyable a read as it is cerebrally stimulating, The Great Indian Novel brilliantly retells reality as myth.

A book that redefines the adjective- Awesome

I bless the day I had picked up this book and casually leafed through its pages. The very first paragraph gets you hooked- "India is not a developing country but a country in the advanced stages of decay." I dont think any other line in the written history of English could define India in a better fashion.
The book has clubbed the plots of Indian Independence struggle and Mahabharata with such finesse that you would be transported into a magical realm where you would be viewing the Indian In...

    Tharoor’s Mahabharat in modern context!

The Great Indian Novel is a treat to all the fans of historical fiction. It is not like a regular historical fiction. True, the author fabricates his plot on the foundation of a historical event (the Mahabharat) but, to him history is a cyclical and not a linear concept. Unlike the regular historical fiction which deals with unearthing a secret or a perspective alteration of an already-told tale, this novel deals with the continuation of history in the present. The text is replete with humou...

    Excellent

The book narrates the moden indian society and polity in form of Indian mythology. Ganesh, Bhim, Arjun etc etc are the characters of this novel.
The writer however is Tharoor, but the english used is simple. So don't be afraid of the Tharoorosaurus.
I got the deal in 284. So look for the moment when price drops, which is near festival time or during sales. It might happen untimely too but the fluctuation repeats. So keep seeking.
The book is enjoyable. It's not at all boring. If you find so,...

    A different experience

All the controversies surrounding the author apart, one has to appreciate the book for its intelligence and the creativity.Blending India's arguably the greatest mythology with India's greatest achievement of the past century is a difficult task in itself but to do it by using many of the freedom fighters and matching them up with one historical character from Mahabharatha is to put it in a simple way 'ingenious'.Shashi Tharoor proves that he is an intellectual of the highest order with this b...

    The great Indian read !

Very well written , enjoyed it thoroughly.
I would suggest every Indian read & understand this tactician's story.
A very beautifully narrated hi-story of India and the Colonizers
and the author has genuinely defined the grass root Indian traits throughout the book.

Perfect book for those who like Mahabharata and India's Independence Struggle. The Author has beautifully and interesting framed the Anologies between India now and India then.

    No Holy Cows

Shashi Tharoor, the inveterate outsider (now turned staunch Trivandrum MP) has very neatly transposed the Indian independence movement back to the epic time of the Mahabharat, with famous historical figures occupying quite easily the place of the epic's characters.
The book focuses more on the build-up to the metaphorical Kurukshetra (the Emergency) than the battle itself.
It's full of irreverent and sometimes cringeworthy puns and allusions - but most of all, this is a book written by a very...

Q:Can a 15 year old teen read this book?
A:Probably, but if I were you I would have avoided it because of some parts are little obscene. I will advise you to try reading nonfiction books from the same author as they are very informative.
