In The Heat of the Night (1967), directed by Norman Jewison, is an American mystery film based on the novel of the same name written by John Ball. Sidney Poitier, Warren Oates and Rod Steiger lead the star cast of this movie, which is based on the story of a black cop who gets involved in a murder investigation in a small racist town in Mississippi. In the Heat Of The Night won five Academy Awards in 1967, including the Academy Award for the Best Actor (Rod Steiger) and the Academy Award for Best Picture. This Norman Jewison film is set in a small imaginary town called Sparta in Mississippi, where the investigation into the murder of a prominent industrialist is underway. Like most of the residents of this little town, the police Chief Bill Gillespie, played by Rod Steiger is quite racist. So when his deputy Sam Wood, played by Warren Oates, sees a black man, Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), in the railway station on the night of the murder with substantial money in his wallet, he begins to suspect him and brings him to the police chief. Upon investigation, they find out that Tibbs is not the murderer but infact a celebrated homicide detective of the Philadelphia police. Tibbs wants nothing to do with this murder investigation but his superiors in Philadelphia and the widow of the murdered industrialist persuade him to take on the case and solve it. As Gillespie and Tibbs start working together, they forget their initial differences and start respecting each other. Their investigations point out to two main suspects Eric Endicott, a large and wealthy plantation owner and Sam Woods, the deputy who everyone starts growing suspicious about. Homicide investigations are never simple and as Tibbs and Gillespie keep digging deeper for the truth, the reality just gets murkier. In The Heat Of The Night (1967) was released in DVD format by MGM Studios with a U (Universal) rating. The movie is in English with subtitles in Mandarin, Chinese, Cantonese Chinese. It is available in one disc with a runtime of 109 minutes.
