The purpose of this book written in a journal format with references is to disseminate as widely as possible the knowledge the author gained during his research. Taking President Kennedy's symbolic $1 annual salary as an example the author wishes to make the book available for a representational figure with no profit. While reporting the epidemiology of thousands of radioiodine treated benign hyperthyroid patients in Poland it also covers iodine deficiencies, nutrition, goitrogens, and potential treatments. In addition to the text, charts, and graphics the author created and implemented computer databases of patient files and literature, and geographic information systems for mapping patterns. While some are gifted various designations even noble peace prizes as incentives, others must overcome many obstacles including economic, social, health, family, psychological, and institutional often quenching idealism and faith in humanity, but developing character and revealing a clearer view of the world. The author is honoured to be amongst the very few to have encountered such a generous amount of obstacles during his extensive studies. Imagination, wisdom, and honesty are not easily discernible, but ideally degrees should be rough measures of achievement, knowledge, and even intelligence instead of simply acting as gateways to careers, wealth, and power. In a cut and paste society qualities such as industriousness, perseverance, self sacrifice, knowledge, talent, morality, and truth are increasingly rare yet often eliciting fear and envy in those with character flaws confirming the proverb that merit may be a barrier to success.
