A delightful exercise in lateral thinking

There could be no three more disparate things than locks, mathematics and the Mahabharata. However, as Locks Mahabharata Mathematics shows, this is as entertaining  a combination as any. Given here is a treasure trove of stories drawn from all three subjects. What could be more beguiling than a book that mixes Draupadi, a lock with five keys, and the quirky world of polynomials? Or Jarasandha – who could be split apart but whose two halves could never be kept separate – split locks and symmetries? The Mahabharata is known for its stories. Lesser known are the fascinating combinations of locks which Dr Raghu – an avid collector – throws light upon, or the esoteric world of pure mathematics that he conveys for a lay audience. Divided into ten chapters, Locks Mahabharata Mathematics has stories ranging from that of Draupadi, to Yudhishthira’s gamble, to Shukrayacharya and Kacha. Keeping them company are chancy locks, interacting keys and binary stars. Profusely illustrated with drawings of locks from his personal collection, this is a neatly original book like few others. Recalling books such as The Mind’s I, Fantasies and Reflections on Self and Soul, The Tipping Point, and Gödel, Escher, Bach …, underlying it is a simple principle, one might say: Pure logic is the ruin of the spirit, as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said. These are tales that combine reason with fantasy to elevate the spirit.

    Interesting parallels...

First of all, the thought of comparing three apparently disparate things like Locks, Mahabharata and Mathematics itself is a very interesting one. One would definitely have very high expectations given such a combination of topics in the title. I should say the author really did not disappoint me, though, at a few places in the book the parallels seemed superficial.

This book, apart from introducing us to the world of links between these three different topics, it also introduced us to the w...

    Adventures in Lateral Thinking

The book worked at several levels for me: the Mahabharat stories told with an interesting twist brought back childhood memories--but the story telling style was definitely racier than my grandmother's! A revelation in terms of the ingenuity of craftsman of our country making such complex and intelligent locks. And a slightly more interesting take on mathematics than I remember from school and college. I have to confess I skipped a bit of the maths though!

But what I enjoyed most was the wea...

    If you are into locks...

The MB retelling, with its forced metaphors and tenuous attempts at making it cool for the corporate kids, is quite terrible. The maths is kind of elementary- if you are not exposed to it already, there are better books that will remedy it. The locks, on the other hand, were fascinating. I wish the author focussed exclusively on it. Photographs, as opposed to illustrations, would've been nice.
I can imagine Prof. Raghunathan holding court on these topics over drinks, but sadly it didn't work ...

    Searching for Resolution!

Well, the title got me! I confess. And after that it was a laborious exercise in flipping the pages, one after another in the hope that there would be some wonderful, imaginative coalescence of locks, Mah?bh?rat and mathematics...I ploughed on laboriously in the hope but was disappointed till I reached the end of the book. The content disappoints the title. As a serious collector of locks, the author would be well-advised to write a book featuring all of his 300 odd locks, detailing each with...

    Interesting with a 'but'

    Bought the book, read it.
Instead of writing a review story myself, I wish to share an already written review which I happen to agree with.
    Do read this before buying.

    An Excellent Read

An unusual book. The language of the stories is informal and refreshing. The locks are amazing. The mathematics is of high school level, but very interestingly presented. It will be unfair to expect the mathematics and the mahabharata and the locks to fit each other like a glove. But the author does spell that out in the preface. I was at the book launch in Bangalore. Now I can see why Mr. Subroto Bagchi of Mindtree who launched the book said the book belonged to the world of Discovery Channe...

Doesn't unlock the beauty of Mahabharata

I had been waiting for over 3 months having pre-booked this one. Firstly, the publisher Harper collins website updated the release in Jul while Flip kart continued to show it as upcoming release. Having received the book finally last week when I got down to reading, I found it downright dis-appointing. While the reference of locks and mathematics is ok, but the author's usage of Mahabharata's references is quite light and hardly adds to the vast sea of knowledge that already exists on the epic...
