  • Description

In Me and My Plays, Mahesh Dattani tells us about this difficulties in trying to survive in a system that is not too open to the idea of theatre.

    Summary of the Book

Professional theatre has been gaining popularity today, but it still has a long way to go if we have to call it successful. Mahesh Dattani has done a great job in shaping English theatre in India. In the past twenty-five years, he is known to have explored bold topics like homosexuality, religious fanaticism, child sexual abuse and gender bias. In terms of theatrical innovation, he has managed to raise the bar and introduce his audience to many new concepts. In this book, he speaks of the highs and lows of trying to make a mark in a system that is not open to professional theatre. It includes Where Did I Leave My Purdah?, a story about the life of Nazia, an actress in her eighties who has to confront her past demons when she attempts to make a comeback. The Big Fat City is a dark comedy in which the residents of an apartment in Mumbai become accomplices in a murder. Both these plays reflect the lies that we live in our everyday lives.

    It made a wonderful gift

I bought this for my friend and he was thrilled since his original copy has been misplaced. Dattani is a wonderful playwright and also very skilled at writing screenplays. The characters in the story leap off of the pages and make for an amazing read.
