  • Description
Considered one the masterpieces of realist fiction, George Eliot's novel, Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life, explores a fictional nineteenth-century Midlands town in the midst of modern changes. The quiet drama of ordinary lives and flawed choices are played out in the complexly portrayed central characters of the novel-the idealistic Dorothea Brooke; the ambitious Dr. Lydgate; the spendthrift Fred Vincy; and the steadfast Mary Garth. The appearance of two outsiders further disrupts the town's equilibrium-Will Ladislaw, the spirited nephew of Dorothea's husband, the Rev. Edward Casaubon, and the sinister John Raffles, who threatens to expose the hidden past of one of the town's elite.

Why George Eliot couldn't write War & Peace but could write Middlemarch

George Eliot once very politely told people that she never asked people over unless they wanted to visit her in the first place. This was because she was living in sin with a married man and wouldn't this taint the chastity of Mrs-whoever-came-for-a-visit?

Thus, it is no wonder she never wrote 'War and Peace' but instead came up with Middlemarch a book written in seculsion which may explain the intricate attention to characters' psychology and the sole setting being in the rural area of Midd...

More than Great value for money

It takes a while to get into the groove, but if you stick to it, you'll love the lyrical english of the old, delightful insights into character and the quotes at the beginning of every chapter. Just don't mind the girth.

    Surprise!

When i started reading the book, i merely read it as a manuscript descriptive of life in an England parish. But suddenly i realized that i have become embroiled in lot more than mere descriptions! There are so many shades to each character, so many nuances in their habits, so much familiarity in their peculiarity, i am too a part of that English parish. An amazingly in depth and relevant reflection of true human nature, from base pettiness right up to the sombre heights of glory.

A Sprawling tale of provincial life with thick discription of communal life - the country town, the surrounding villages, George Eliot's novel is a lesson on how to be honest with oneself.
