  • Description

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel by Oscar Wilde. The book deals with a Faustian spin on one man’s narcissism as he refuses to age, and a lone portrait alone shows the world his truly hideous form.

    Summary of the Book

Dorian Gray refuses to age. It is a strange fact about this handsome young man who manages to make women swoon by merely being present in the same room. Despite the years, he looks just like he always has. However, there is a melancholic secret behind Gray’s apparent immortality. He hides a hideous portrait in his house, one that shows his true form. What Gray needs to understand is that the outward form isn’t the most important facet to a man, it is what is inside that truly matters. And despite his handsome outer façade, Dorian Gray’s heart is as ugly as the portrait, hiding his vices in plain sight. If he doesn’t manage to overcome them, they will be his complete undoing.

    About Oscar Wilde

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was an Irish writer and poet best remembered for his epigrams, his plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death. He is also one of the foremost gay icons of latter half of the 20th century.

The above book was adapted into several films over the years, including one version by Oliver Parker, starring Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray, Ben Chaplin as Basil Hallward and Colin Firth as Henry Wotton.

    • Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. He went to Trinity College, Dublin and then to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he began to propagandize the new Aesthetic (or 'Art for Art's Sake') Movement. Despite winning a first and the Newdigate Prize for Poetry, Wilde failed to obtain an Oxford scholarship, and was forced to earn a living by lecturing and writing for periodicals. After his marriage to Constance Lloyd in 1884, he tried to establish himself as a writer, but with little initial success. However, his three volumes of short fiction, The Happy Prince (1888), Lord Arthur Savile's Crime (1891) and A House of Pomegranates (1891), together with his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), gradually won him a reputation as a modern writer with an original talent, a reputation confirmed and enhanced by the phenomenal success of his Society Comedies - Lady Windermere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest, all performed on the West End stage between 1892 and 1895. Success, however, was short-lived. In 1891 Wilde had met and fallen extravagantly in love with Lord Alfred Douglas. In 1895, when his success as a dramatist was at its height, Wilde brought an unsuccessful libel action against Douglas's father, the Marquess of Queensberry. Wilde lost the case and two trials later was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for acts of gross indecency. As a result of this experience he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol. He was released from prison in 1897 and went into an immediate self-imposed exile on the Continent. He died in Paris in ignominy in 1900.

    Great Language good story

Had the character of Henry Wutton been written by any contemporary writer, it would have attracted unprecedented ire. If the strong misogynist tone of the novel is ignored, it can be easily seen why this one figures as a mandatory reading in most universities. The most attractive part of the book is its language. The classic Victorian diction and sensibilities of a bygone era make it an interesting read for anyone who desires to spend some time in the antiquity of late 19th century Britain.
