  • Description
“The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she’s treated.” — George Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion “What is life but a series of inspired follies ? The difficulty is to find them to do. Never lose a chance : it doesn’t come every day.” — George Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion “The greatest British dramatist since Shakespeare.” — The Guardian A chance meeting between Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, and Cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle leads to a bet that he can teach her how to speak proper English. While Higgins undertakes an effort to train Liza out of her Cockney accent to prove that it is one’s manner of speaking that determines one’s opportunities, Liza’s refreshing candor and generosity of spirit effect a change in Higgins. Beguiling, relatable, and engaging, Pygmalion is an uproariously funny and ultimately touching tale of mutual transformation. All the while, beneath its irresistible charm, it offers a scathing critique of class, entitlement, and social prejudice. Ever since its wildly popular first production in 1913, Pygmalion has amused and entertained audiences the world over and has become one of the most adapted plays of all time. In 1938 Shaw provided the screenplay for a filmed version of Pygmalion for which he received an Academy Award. George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist, journalist, and political activist. Unrivaled in his lifetime and since as the leading English-language dramatist of the twentieth century, Shaw was a master of prose style. He wrote more than sixty plays, among them Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1913), and Saint Joan (1923). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925.

    Short but brilliant!

Can be finished in one or two sittings. Highly witty.

But in this book, the entire text is cramped. There is not much spacing between the lines. Otherwise, recommend it to any book-lover as it hardly costs any money.

It says - Complete and Unabridged; although, the writing was brilliant, it was fairly simpler than I had expected.

    G.B.S.' most pleasant play

George Bernard Shaw was one of the wittiest writers of his time.
His plays make you laugh and ponder at the same time, but what is most amazing about his writings is the development of the characters and 'Pygmalion' is a perfect example of it.
As this book is about a professor of Phonetics(the study of a language and its sounds)there are a lot of detailed conversations to bring forth the pronunciations of the dialects.
It takes a little attention to understand it, but that is essen...

    Pretty good

The book do comes in great condition and I was really happy with the purchase. But the fact it costed me a little more than the MRP was a bit of drawback. But the book came in a total brand new condition so you can go for it really. Print, letter size and everything else is just perfect.

    a beautiful work of art

This book has portrayed a very nice image of a woman's effort to make everyone in her life feel existence. During the process of transforming Eliza from a ugly duckling to a beauty queen Professor Higgins overlooked her endeavor to learn etiquettes. It simply doesn't mean that he was a passionate about his work and indifferent towards anything in this world, because he knew mock people (Miss Eynsford Hill). He had a superior feeling regarding his knowledge which restrained him from even ackno...
