Once a royal exclusive and a textile craft of yore, Gota Patti work sarees are much more commonplace today. Famous fashion labels and designers have transformed this age-old embroidery style into a new form by blending it with contemporary fabrics and colours. These sarees are a popular wedding ensemble because of their intricate and elaborate pattern designs and embellishments. Gota Patti was once done only with pure gold, silver or copper wires. However, with advancements in textile, material like gilt and lurex have enabled power-loom mass productions of these beautiful motifs. An authentic Gota Patti bridal saree has the prestige of an heirloom that can be passed on from one generation to another. The different forms of Gota Patti work include seekhi, phool, bijiya, mothda, bakhandi, and lappa. Seekhi is the most commonly used style of handiwork in Gotta Patti sarees. However, phool gota is usually used as a buti. There are primarily two techniques used in the making of these sarees. The first being, folding of the gota (golden lace) in pattis (rhomboid leaves) to create butis or a pattern before sewing on the fabric. The gota tukdi technique uses pre-cut pieces of different shapes appliqued on the fabric. You can find all sorts of Gota Patti work sarees online from brands such as Mimosa, Broadstar, Pinarth, Neelghar, and Kastiel. The information you are reading has been last updated on 06-Jun-26.
