In That Long Silence, award-winning novelist, Shashi Deshpande beautifully portrays the plight of a married Indian woman constrained by the rules and regulations of a rigid society. Very Good

This is not about the content of the book, because there's no doubt in the excellency of the craft (it's a classic in the Indian writing in English). The only reason I have not given 5 stars is because there are spelling mistakes in the book, also the grammatical errors.

As far as the novel's content is concerned, That Long Silence is the story that traces the struggle of a woman, named "Jaya", with constraints, repression and most importantly her own "silence", her "long silence". Ironic how...

Why a woman is more than a daugther, wife or mother...

When it comes to being a woman, sacrifice of ambitions and personal self is a prerequisite of the patriarchal tradition. Jaya becomes the 'perfect wife' but we are not perfect beings and so she loses sight of the girl she once was and becomes merely a 'wife'.

She dreams of happiness within her family which is elusive for there is no real communication present. They are just people living together but not bonding together. She ends up hating her father who taught her to believe she was meant...

That Long Silence by Shashi Deshpande is a beautiful Indian feminist novel in English. This novel is about the journey of Jaya(protagonist) from the outer world to self. The society in which boys taught that they are the power while they are growing towards manhood and girls taught that they are listeners not speaker and they have to follow the man silently. The present novel tells us how Jaya find herself as Jaya and how...
