  • Description

The Catcher in the Rye  is the ultimate novel for disaffected youth, but it's relevant to all ages. The story is told by Holden Caulfield, a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves: the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection.

Lazy in style, full of slang and swear words, it's a novel whose interest and appeal comes from its observations rather than its plot intrigues (in conventional terms, there is hardly any plot at all). Salinger's style creates an effect of conversation, it is as though Holden is speaking to you personally, as though you too have seen through the pretences of the American Dream and are growing up unable to see the point of living in, or contributing to, the society around you.

    Author Info
    • Jerome David Salinger, born New York City, Jan. 1, 1919, established his reputation on the basis of a single novel, The Catcher in the Rye (1951), whose principal character, Holden Caulfield, epitomized the growing pains of a generation of high school and college students. The public attention that followed the success of the book led Salinger to move from New York to the remote hills of Cornish, N.H. Before that he had published only a few short stories; one of them, A Perfect Day for Bananafish, which appeared in The New Yorker in 1949, introduced readers to Seymour Glass, a character who subsequently figured in Franny and Zooey (1961) and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenter and Seymour: An Introduction (1963), Salinger's only other published books. Of his 35 published short stories, those which Salinger wishes to preserve are collected in Nine Stories (1953).

5 Reasons Why You Should Read Salinger

    1) This is one of the best novels you'll ever read.
    2) It's not a tome, so you WILL have time to update your Facebook status from time to time. Tell the world that you're reading something substantial...at last.
3)You might just feel like writing after reading this one. That doesn't mean you'll be good at it, but its a start.
    4) You can act like an intellectual snob and judge everybody...(silently, of course). No one wants to hear about Salinger from a 25 year old.
    5) You'll still be a phony,...

A novel far ahead of its time.

While going through the first few pages of this wonderfully well packaged book, I coudnt' help but wonder if I was really reading a novel set up almost 60 years ago. The language is so contemporary, you almost feel its a blog! But then, what you have in your hands is anything but the ramblings of a disgruntled young man on the web.It is intricate and meaningful. Black humour at its very best. An amazing piece of literature.

To all the negative reviews : Look before you leap

Before you buy this book, you need to ask yourself this (No, I'm not being dramatic) : Whats the best book I've read so far?

If your answer is some Sidney Sheldon book (no offence) or some other racy or otherwise thriller involving multinational companies and jets and automatic rifles and secret agencies, wait for a moment. Do you have the patience to appreciate a slow book, one that drags on to an inconclusive ending and even then will leave you hanging?

No? Then don't buy this, you'll be...

A fertile plot to build your intellectual infrastructure on..!!

It builds slowly inside you.. And it takes a while before it hits you, and when it does it, it does terrific. The book leaves a profound effect on your psyche if you read it during your adolescent life (unless you are insensitive). If you are past this stage, then too you can enjoy it if you only let the effervescence in you be alive, if you revisit those younger days, you know 16, 17..and all that happens..
Having said this, there are also chances that you will hate this book, if you are not...

    Rich and Easy.It Killed Me.

Its a lovely book! I just finished reading it and I must say I had a wonderful read, I am huge fan of modern classics and "The Catcher In The Rye" has been added to my favorites with The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and The Fall by Albert Camus.
The writing is very simple and extremely easy to read, there's hardly any difficult words and yet the novel manages to leave behind a rich experience.
This book was originally written for adults but I think teenagers would like it much more, I'm 15 and I...

The catcher in the rye? What do you think it is.......

I just happened to pick up this book because I had nothing to do, "The catcher in the rye" I had no idea what it meant or what to expect from the it.And I got to tell you that once I started reading it I realized had never read anything like this, the way its been written is "weird" in a good way and refreshing. The pivotal character Hollden Caulfield, seventeen year old talks about his life, friends ,family, how unassuming he is, how he feels that most of the things and people around him are ...

It totally depends on the reader, if he's going to like the book or not. Other than that, it's a classic book to read.

    Great book, shabby service

The book is an absolute wonder, the only thing that mars the beauty is the shabby service by flipkart. When I ordered the book, the delivery time was supposed to be 2-3 days, instead it came a week later, which isn't really appreciated by me. What happened flippy? I've ordered earlier from this site and the service was just great....hope that wont happen in the future....awesome book, i'd like to say, again.
