  • Description
Why did Gandhi hate iodine (I, 53)? Why did the Japanese kill Godzilla with missiles made of cadmium (Cd, 48)? How did radium (Ra, 88) nearly ruin Marie Curie's reputation? And why did tellurium (Te, 52) lead to the most bizarre gold rush in history? The periodic table is a crowning scientific achievement, but it's also a treasure trove of adventure, greed, betrayal, and obsession. The fascinating tales in The Disappearing Spoon follow elements on the table as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, conflict, the arts, medicine, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. Adapted for a middle grade audience, the young readers edition of The Disappearing Spoon offers the material in a simple, easy-to-follow format, with approximately 20 line drawings and sidebars throughout. Students, teachers, and burgeoning science buffs will love learning about the history behind the chemistry.

    Wonderful Book on Chemistry

I have still not finished reading the full book but found the part read to be exciting. very well written. Those who love Chemistry will find the book a "God Send " . History of the elements of the Periodic table , accounts of the scientists ... very thrilling. Though one may need a background of Chemistry to understand the book ... which may be a drawback to the general readers.

Fantastic book about Chemistry, History and Psychology!

This is one of the best books written on a subject that could be considered boring for most - the author has a humorous yet, serious and thought provoking style of writing.
He explores the world of scientists and the battle for the world tracing the history of the discovery of the elements neatly interwoven with world history and the lives of the scientists that discovered them.
This should be mandatory reading in all schools as it shows the interdependence of the subjects that children often...
