  • Description

The Handmaid’s Tale is a science fiction novel, set in a dystopian future where the United States of America has fallen into a military dictatorship called the Republic of Gilead.

    Summary of the Book

When a terrorist attack on the United States leaves its President and most of its Congress dead, a group of revolutionaries take matters into their own hands. They call themselves the Sons of Jacob, and they suspend the US Constitution in a mad attempt to seize control as they form the Republic of Gilead. With a chauvinistic drive, they take away all the women’s rights and begin to reorganize society. In this new regime, a class of women are separated and used as concubines. They are called handmaids, and their sole purpose is to procreate, a dark remedy the Sons of Jacob choose to fend off the threat of sterility. Offred is one such woman, her name itself a melancholy reminder that she is the handmaid of Fred the Commander. Despite regulations which dictate that Fred must only make love to Offred during the “Ceremony”, where his wife Serena is also present, he begins an illicit relationship with her. In a desperate attempt to get her pregnant, Serena uses her supposed knowledge of Offred’s surviving family – the daughter she lost while trying to escape Gilead – to force her to sleep with her driver Nick. Offred begins to have feelings for Nick, and this soon sets her on a path towards what could either be her freedom or her complete destruction.

    Dystopia at its best

This is the best dystopian novel I have ever read. Period. The possibility of such a horrid future cannot be denied. That's where the book gets you. And it doesn't let go for days. You are trapped like a bewildered fly in its artistic, beautiful and yet horrifying web, and there is nothing you can do about it. My advice: read it in short sessions. The writing might dog you down if you try to read it in one sitting. But when taken in small doses, the writing is marvelous.

    Stunning Imagination.

Margaret Atwood has an aggressive imagination about dystopia that is created in this novel. When religious fundamentalism becomes the norm of life the world would be upside down. This upside down world is powerfully portrayed in this novel. Being a Canadian the religious fundamentalism in the novel is related to Christianity. She has a power generating prose. Do not miss the novel.
A sample excerpt: "A man is just a woman's strategy to create other women."

    Terrific purchase

it is one of the must read books for all book worms. the way the dystopian future has been presented is quite impressive in the fact that it was written in the 1985, and the flair with which the book moves ahead leaves within us a part of the protagonist herself even after it has ended.

    Fabulous!

The book is beautiful. You already know about the delicate subject of the book if you are thinking of buying it. It is indeed a must-read.

About the book: the cover has a rubbery texture. It is smooth and has good binding. The quality of the pages is good and worth the price. Oh, I bought it for 299/- I guess it is a good deal.
