Summary of the Book

In the 7th Century CE, a forty year old merchant was visited by Gabriel, an angel, and received a revelation from God. His name was Muhammad and he had a habit of praying alone for several weeks a year in a cave on Mount Hira near Mecca. And there, he received other revelations which commanded him to recite verses in God’s praise. Three years later, he began preaching the revelations he received from the angel publicly, beginning the foundation of the religion of Islam. These verses contained the undisputed word of the God Almighty. There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his Prophet. With these verses, the world was changed forever and the word of God was delivered unto the people. Muhammad’s teachings are still alive in the Holy Qu’ran, and bring Muslims the word of God in the form of Suras. It teaches the Islamic concept of monotheism and shows how God is eternal, omniscient and omnipotent. It also brings the message of the ultimate fate of the universe, and the promise of the day of judgment at the end of time. It speaks of the principal Islamic values of prayer, fasting, pilgrimage and complete faith in God, and guides readers in the aspects of marriage, family, loyalty, forgiveness and charity. Tarif Khalidi is a Palestinian historian and translator who is currently the Shaykh Zayid Chair in Islamic and Arabic Studies at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon.

Dr. Khalidi is a graduate of Haileybury College in Hertford, England and the University College, Oxford. He later pursued his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago. Among his other publications are: Images of Muhammad: Narratives of the Prophet in Islam Across the Centuries, Arabic Historical Thought in the Classical Period, A Study in the Meaning and Method of History and Islamic Historiography: The Histories of Mas`udi.
