His metaphorical search for his long lost friend Murarilal is the high point of the film. One of India's finest directors, Hrishikesh Mukherjee teams up with Gulzar as lyricist and dilaogue writer to give us some of the best lines in Hindi Cinema and some hauntingly lovely songs. It plays on your heartstrings, but in the end you will agree, "Anand lives on".

Bawarchi
Old Shivnath was the head of the Sharma family, a position that brought to him more problems than peace. It was a large joint family with his sons & their wives and children, a grand daughter, Krishna, who had lost her parents in a fatal motor accident. Yet this was a joint family house divided against it self; suffering at all times from discord and disharmony. When everything seemed to have reached the breaking point, Shivnath watched with dismay and helpessness, as he feared that his house, his family all would just collapse like a pack of cards. When everything seemed to have been lost, there comes a man. A cook, but no ordinary Bawarchi this, though the dishes he served were never less than delicious. In dact, his extraordinary capabilities made the family look at him with suspicion. They could not help wondering how could a cook sing, dance, write and recite poems, be adept at even the most advanced mathematics ready to solve great engineering problems, and even prescribe medicine to all. The "Bawarchi" wins his place in the hearts of the family. However all of a sudden, the Bawarchi disappears & so do the valuable & the cash with him. Has he stolen it or...

Thodisi Bewafaii
Arvind Kumar Choudhary is widowed, respectable and wealthy businessman, who lives with his only son, Arun (Rajesh Khanna), in a palatial house. He re-marries another woman, Sujata, a widow with two daughters, Veena and Seema. Arun does not respect her and refuses to even speak with her, Arun meets Neema Deshmukh (Shabana Azmi) and both of fall in love. With approval of their respective families, they get married. Then things start to slide financially for the Choudharys when Arun accidentally breaks a valuable diamond while daydreaming about Neema; the Choudharys lose all their savings, building vehicles and property, move to a shanty apartment, and Arvind passes away. Arun takes over the reins of this family, and starts talking to his stepmother. Neema gives birth to a baby boy and they name him Abhinandan.

Misunderstandings occur between Sujata Neema, they escalate, fueled by some gossip from neighboring women.
