  • Description

The Bhagavad Gita is an evolving response dealing with the conflicts between the Vedas and the Vedantas. This book is a humanistic critique of the Gita. In the past, there have been many people who have written the Bhagavad Gita in different styles.

    Summary of the Book

Meghnad Desai writes about the Bhagavad Gita saying that it is a secular text. He believes that it is a creation of humans done over centuries. He also puts across that the Gita, at some level, reinforces inequality among people and is toxic in many ways. It also says that it shows people not to care about others and that it justifies violence to a large extent.

    About the Author

Meghnad Desai is an Indian born, British economist and labor politician. He is an atheist and a member of the National Secular Society. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan award.

    Bad Scholarship and Factually Incorrect

The foundation for the thesis of this book rests on bad scholarship, incorrect assumptions and easily falsifiable facts. The Gita is a synthesis of Vedanta, Yoga, Sankhya, Karma and Bhakti. There are for example no instances of refutation or appropriation of the core Buddhist principles of annata(non-self), dukka (suffering) or annica(impermanence) in the Bhagwad Gita. The Bhagwad Gita takes its base from the Upanishads (primarily the aranyakas) to refute and redefine elements of early Mimams...

    A fantastic Book

A very good book, which dissects the Gita threadbare. A Must Read for every right thinking citizen of this Country. India with its vast cultural heritage has yet not emerged out of the "Developing Country" status because of the following factors:
    (a) Rabid Corruption
    (b) Low premium on human life (Notwithstanding a high premium on the life of certain animals- For eg. COWS)
    (c) Low status of Women
    (d) Racism of the highest Order.

Meghnad Desai elaborates that the reasons are not far to seek. ...
