Why Growth Matters: How Economic Growth in India Reduced Poverty and the Lessons for Other Developing Countries by Jagdish N. Bhagwati and Arvind Panagariya delves into the different economic strategies that India has seen over the years, after Independence.

    Summary of the Book

Since independence, India has undergone radical changes in the field of economy. Nehru’s experiments as the first Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi’s rather inflexible ideas and Narasimha Rao’s visionary idea of opening up to globalization and liberalization in the early 90s have contributed in their own ways, and have made India slowly evolve as a drastically growing economy. Different economic measures have addressed poverty in better ways with each passing day. In this book, the authors have made a thorough research of India’s enonomic growth and have encouraged those free trade strategies as pro-development, which are going to help the budding economists to make plans, anti-poverty movements not just in India, but across the globe. India has set examples for other Southeast Asian countries, African countries and also the eastern part of Europe as to how poverty could be exterminated from its roots by implementing effective economic policies for better changes.

They make such a compelling arguement that is hard to rebut supported by statistics and refernces.
