The Walking Dead  (for PS3)

Zombies are upon us, amassing in size as the days go by and infecting the whole world one person at a time. The onus is upon you to get to the bottom of the outbreak and try and put a stop to the apocalypse. The Walking Dead is primarily a comic book written by Robert Kirkman. Telltale Games started development on the game and brought in most of the key elements from the Comic into the video game version of Robert’s universe.

Synopsis and Features

The game contains a 5 part series within it. Each series is a separate episode within the game with its own story that cascades into the next episode. The episodes themselves serve as major checkpoints in the game allowing you to gauge your overall progress and review the decisions taken in the previous chapters. You can gain access to the 5 episodes or seasons at one time by purchasing a season pass which will grant you access to the dark twisted world of The Walking Dead. Every action that you undertake has far reaching consequences. The potential to change the entire outcome of the game rests with you as the player. The story has a dark and emotional turn at every chapter.

Lee Everett is a convicted criminal out to explore the second chance he has been given at a normal life. However, normal is not what he comes across when he stumbles onto an outbreak that turns humans into Zombies, or the Undead. The Zombie Apocalypse has just taken place in Georgia which turns scores of humans into the undead. Lee must find out what led to the events and how to mitigate it while also taking care of Clementine, a young girl he rescued from a Zombie Horde. The developers have enhanced several aspects of the story woven by Kirkman and provided for a refreshing outlook into the zombie world. Glenn Rhee, Hershel and Shawn Greene are notable characters from the game who make their appearance in-game as well.

Where most point and click games focus on solving puzzles and unraveling mysteries, The Walking Dead focuses mainly on gameplay and storyline. It also gives a strong emphasis on character building. The chance to develop your character comes along with the steady progression of the game. Each conversation you have with NPCs or fellow players adds to your experience and allows you to build on your character based on the underlying consequence of your in-game choices. These choices come in the form of dialogues that you engage in with other characters in the game. You will get various chances to help others in a world where corpses come to life and survivors must do everything in their power to keep the undead at bay.

The game spans over 5 episodes, A New Day, Starved For Help, Long Road Ahead, Around Every Corner and No Time Left. Each episode is a full length campaign with goals to accomplish and people to save. Every objective you accomplish brings you that much closer to solving the mystery around you. Every episode also carries forward the consequences for your earlier decisions. When you are forced to live with the decisions you have made, you will begin to think more clearly before planning your next move, much like in a real game of chess. The game gives due attention to puzzles and problem solving exercises as well, allowing you to periodically take a break from the undead and exercise your brain. The PS3 version of the game has an ESRB rating of M for Mature, aged 17 years and above.
